Dance Your Way to Weight Loss
Music is a great motivator to help you lose weight. Whether you invest in an instructor-led class such as Zumba or dance off the pounds in your own home, it’s time to start your weight loss journey with music.
Dancing is a fabulous way to lose weight because it often involves your whole body; it’s a great cardiovascular workout involving most of the major muscle groups in the body.
Dancing can also help improve coordination over time. And why not dance? It will feel like less of a workout and more of a treat; would you rather break a sweat on a treadmill or dancing around in your living room, to your favorite, upbeat songs?
The key to losing weight through dance is the intensity and the length of the workout. A good dance workout should last approximately 45-60 minutes.
So how can you dance your way to weight loss?
Read on to find out.
Sign Up for a Dance Class
Perhaps one of the best ways to dance away the pounds is to sign up for a dance class. Whether it’s calorie burning Zumba or a beginner’s salsa class, you’ll be more likely to stick with it if you have to pay for it.
Classes are a great way to get out of the house, meet new friends that share your healthy interests, and commit to losing unwanted pounds. Really look at your schedule and decide a time that will work best for you.
Consider if you’re most likely to attend a class before work, after work, or during the weekends.
If you work from home, consider the time you usually have free and then make a commitment to dance. When picking a dance class, you’ll need to think about the intensity level the class offers: the higher the intensity, the more calories you’ll burn and the better results you’ll see.
Higher intensity hour-long dance classes such as hip hop, salsa, swing, and Zumba will typically burn more calories than classes such as tap, belly dancing, ballet, or country dancing. Whatever dance class you choose, the most important thing is that you choose it!
Weight Loss Dance YouTube Videos
Don’t have the money to commit to a weekly dance class at a fitness studio? No problem! Lots of fitness experts have posted YouTube videos that showcase dance as a fun fitness workout.
Use key search phrases such as “dance for fitness”, “aerobic dance workout”, “dance workout”, or “dance fitness” to find tons of great videos offering dance workouts.
Many videos may showcase a workout to a particular song; such videos are typically 3-5 minutes long, so for a good workout you’ll need to find a few favorites to hit the bare minimum of 30 minutes daily.
Purchase a Digital or DVD Dance Workout
YouTube is a great free resource, but it requires your WiFi to work whenever you’re ready to workout at home. If your internet connection is spotty, or if it is too much of a hassle to route YouTube videos to your television, then invest in yourself and purchase 5 different dance digital downloads or DVDs.
Why 5? Good question! Not only will it keep your dance workouts interesting, but it’s always a good idea to change up the routine for your muscles. Muscles can become complacent too, so it’s a good idea to create a diverse workout for the best results possible.
Here’s a suggestion for a great dance DVD workout:
Monday: Hip Hop
Thursday: Dance Cardio Workout
Friday: Latin or Salsa
Saturday: Belly Dance
Sunday: Rest Day
Start your dance workouts with two rest days; when you’re ready, eliminate one day and perhaps in time you can eliminate both rest days and dance seven days a week! That will really increase the calorie burn and help you shed those stubborn pounds.
